David Perron of the Detroit Red Wings is happy to be back in the lineup after serving a six-game suspension for a cross check to Artem Zub of the Ottawa Senators. He is not happy, however, with the punishment he received.

Perron Sounds Off on DoPS After Returning from Suspension

Perron returned to the Red Wings today, and was of course asked about how he felt about the six-game ban for the cross check below. Perron drilled Zub after teammate Dylan Larkin was knocked out by Mathieu Joseph.

"I'm just coming in there and trying to stick up for Dylan," Perron said. "You see him, kind of on my second look there, you see him motionless, not moving at all there. Definitely not easy for me to go through that, to turn around and see our captain down on the ice."

Perron went on to say that he felt the suspension was heavy handed.

"You're trying to respond to these types of incidents. Obviously, I got the guy a little high. I understand that there was some discipline that needed to be done there. It just felt like on my side, it was pretty excessive for the comparables, the history, my career — a lot of things really."

Perron Says his Six-game Suspension was Excessive

Perron appealed the ruling, and the NHL's official decision straight from Commissioner Gary Bettman was released today. Bettman upheld the initial punishment, saying Perron absolutely deserved it despite not have much prior history. While Perron cannot get the games back that he missed, a reduction of the sentence on appeal would have gotten him some of the salary that he lost returned.
