Matvei Michkov was considered by many to be the second best player available in the 2023 draft. However, multiple teams cited vague concerns about the player with geopolitics possibly playing a role in why he fell to the Flyers at 7th overall. While the 18-year-old has been on fire this season, he has recently suffered a major setback.

Michkov Diagnosed with Pneumonia, Will Not Return Until After Christmas

Earlier this week it was reported that the 18-year-old offensive dynamo had been diagnosed with Pneumonia. His last game came on December 1st, nearly a week ago.

Matvei Michkov has pneumonia.

Let's pray for a fast and speedy recovery for this young man.

I'll speak for all Flyers fans, they hope you get better Matvei

Pneumonia is a lung infection with a wide range of outcomes. For some it can be relatively mild with relatively little treatment required but for others it can be a serious situation. Michkov seems to be dealing with a particularly stubborn case as it is now being reported that he will likely not return until after Christmas.

Per team, RE #LetsGoFlyers #SCH Matvei Michkov:
«Matvei's participation in the matches immediately after the KHL pause is still in question - 50/50. It depends on how the body reacts, how it feels. Most likely, he will be able to play in the home series from December 26."

Michkov is 1st on his KHL club in points per game and 2nd in points outright, despite playing 6 fewer games than the team leader. He still has a 6 point lead on the team's 3rd top scorer as well despite playing 6 fewer games.

There is no doubt that Michkov has been electric this season. He is without a doubt one of the best, if not the best NHL affiliated prospect in the world not playing in the NHL itself.

We wish Michkov a speedy recovery.
