A 1000-game veteran has decided to hang up the skates midseason at the age of 40.

Plekanec Retires

It was just announced that 1000-game veteran and Czech hockey icon Tomas Plekanec retired from hockey at the age of 40.

After health problems he is not able to finish this season, so he decided to end his playing career in his native Kladno.

Plekanec played in 1001 career NHL games, 984 of which came with the Montreal Canadiens. The other 17 came with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He registered 233 goals and 375 assists for 608 career points in the NHL. His best season came with the Canadiens in 2009-10 after he scored 25 goals and 45 assists for a career-high 70 points.

He left the NHL in 2018-19 to play alongside Jaromir Jagr for Jagr's team HC Kladno.

He had been Kladno's leading scorer for the past couple of years and was producing at a healthy rate before needing to retire. Through 9 games Plekanec had a goal and three assists for 4 total points. He was Kladno's captain since 2020.
