Gary Bettman wants to fine Travis Dermott for using Pride Tape but the NHL rule book may prohibit him from doing so.

Bettman Screwed Over By His Own Rules

Last night defenseman Travis Dermott put the entire NHL on notice by using Pride Tape despite Gary Bettman's ban on the tape.

I just noticed Travis Dermott is quietly using @PrideTape tonight! This is what allyship looks like folks! #Yotes #HockeyISforEveryone

The common assumption is that Bettman will be fining Dermott for using Pride Tape but the NHL rule book shows that Dermott did not actually break any rules.

The Rule Protecting Dermott

Rule 10.1 in the NHL rule book protects Dermott.

Dermott, by rule, is permitted to use whatever color tape he wants... and this wasn't part of any special night event.

By clarifying that any color tape is allowed, Dermott is able to use his Pride Tape.

Adhesive tape of any color may be wrapped around the stick at any place for the purpose of reinforcement or to improve control of the puck

Now we will see if the NHL's lawyers are able to find a loophole to fine Dermott or if he is able to get away with defying Bettman.
