The NHL were once proud supporters of Pride Night around the league, but after players like Ivan Provorov and James Reimer openly came out against them a year ago, its been a major issue ever since.

A major issue

For some reason, the NHL allowing these nights has come under major scrutiny since that point, and in order to get ahead of that in 2023-24, they came out and released a memo to all 32 teams, but it wasn't received well.
This all comes from a reputable source at ESPN in Ryan S. Clark.
NEWS: The NHL sent an updated memo to teams Thursday clarifying what they can do this season with special initiatives such as Pride Night.

A source told ESPN that several teams sought clarity as the first memo was deemed to be confusing and restrictive.
Now, here is a transcript of the confusing part of the memo, and it's safe to say it's understandable why teams were confused and annoyed at the league.
"Players shall not be put in the position of having to demonstrate (or where they may be appearing to demonstrate) personal support for any Special Initiatives. A factor that may be considered in this regard includes, for example, whether a Player (or Players) is required to be in close proximity to any groups or individuals visibly or otherwise clearly associated with such Special Initiative(s)"

A confusing mess

At this point, no one is sure what is happening with specialty nights around the league, and it appears the NHL are in the same boat, so this is something for fans to keep a close eye on as the 2023-24 season approaches.
