Recent news of a new development in this city has fans wondering if it could be the next location for an NHL expansion team.
California to add a Fourth NHL Team in Next Expansion?
NHL insider Kevin Weeks speculated on Twitter that the next NHL expansion city might be located in San Diego, California, potentially making it the fourth team in the Golden State.
With 3 teams currently in California, could San Diego become the 4th @NHL
team there ? The potential Midway Rising mixed use development project would include a 16000 seat Arena. What would you Fans name the potential club there ? #HockeyTwitter
Obviously, California has the San Jose Sharks, the Anaheim Ducks, and the LA Kings. Attendance has been improving in California as well, with the Kings seeing improved attendance stats last year.
Midway Rising Development Could Be Paving the Way for New NHL Team in San Diego
This all hinges on a new development project known as Midway RIsing, a mixed-use residential, commercial, and recreational project that includes a 16,000-seat arena. While this is on the smaller side for the NHL, it could open the door for a new team in California before moving to a larger stadium.
All in all, it's larger than some temporary arenas (looking at you, Arizona) and could be a good fit for a West Coast expansion team. The biggest what-if is the timeline, as these projects generally take 5-10 years to complete.
