The New York Islanders are looking to have a bounce-back season in 2023-24 after losing in the First Round of the playoffs to the Carolina Hurricanes. This was the second year in a row that did not see the Islanders make the second round. Now they have gotten some bad news to start their new campaign.

Young Defenseman Suffers Injury

According to reports an Islanders defenseman might miss some time at the beginning of the NHL year. Alexander Romanov had shoulder surgery in the early part of the offseason. Reports confirm that he could potentially miss part of the beginning of the year.

Alexander Romanov may not be ready for the start of Islanders training camp following offseason shoulder surgery.

But the defenseman is progressing and expected to return soon, per GM Lou Lamoriello.

While it does not sound like a long-term delay in his return Romanov's missing time will still be frustrating to Islanders fans.

Romanov Will Look To Prove His Value

Since being acquired for the 13th overall pick in 2022 Romanov has played 76 games and put up 22 points with the Islanders. He provided a good top four defenseman for the Islanders in his first season. However many believe there could still be another level for Romanov to get to.

At just 23 years old Romanov still has plenty of development in front of him. He could particularly contribute more on the offensive end of the ice. While he has not shown it yet at the NHL level in international competition Romanov has shown the ability to contribute offensively.

He is a smooth skater with good passing abilities. For his skill to take over though he has to get healthy. Look for Romanov to improve throughout the year as he gets more comfortable in his return.
