CSKA of the KHL has gone to battle against the IIHF over a recent suspension of one of their players. This is causing major controversy in the world of hockey.

CSKA Disregards Suspension

CSKA player Ivan Fedotov signed a contract in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers. After a mandated stint in the military Fedotov decided to stay in the KHL with CSKA. However, this breached his agreed-upon contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.

This controversy required the IIHF to step in and make a ruling. The IIHF ruled that the contract with Philadelphia was valid and needed to be honored. Now Ilya Fedotov is playing with CSKA breaching both his contract with the Flyers and his suspension imposed by the IIHF.

Here is a quick recap of a timeline of these events.

1) Fedotov signed a contract with the Flyers.

2) He followed it up by signing a contract with CSKA which is not allowed

3) IIHF deemed Fedotov's contract with the Flyers valid and suspended him from September 1st to December 31st.

4) CSKA was banned from making international transfers for 1 year.

5) Today, Fedotov will be playing which means CSKA is disregarding the suspension and boycotting the IIHF

As a result of these actions, the IIHF will likely respond with some kind of sanctions or punishment. Currently, Russia is already banned from international competition due to the war in Ukraine.
