Every NHL fan at this point knows that players have superstitions that they stick to. Some have to do with the way they tape their sticks, the way they put on their gear, their warmup, or even their number. One of the game's biggest stars might be giving his team an unfair advantage with his superstitions.

Crosby's Biggest Superstition

As most people know who pay attention to hockey Sidney Crosby is attached to the number 87. Not only is it his jersey number but he revolves his life around it in many ways.

Crosby who was born in 1987 sees the number as a source of luck. So much so that he has worked the number into each one of his contracts. Now with Crosby's contract about to be up after the 2024-25 season Crosby may be able to give the Penguins an unfair advantage.

Crosby's Next Contract

Sidney Crosby is currently under contract with the Penguins until 2025 with an annual cap hit of $8,700,000 once again involving the number 87. At the time this contract was signed in 2013, it was considered a discount but still made Crosby one of the highest-paid players in the NHL.

«While precisely how many seasons Crosby's next contract will cover is hard to say, there's not much mystery about the money that will be involved. It's pretty much a lock to be based on some permutation of «87,» whether it's the third in a series of contracts with an $8.7 million salary-cap hit, a deal that pays him $87 an hour or one that's worth 87 cents per second.»

Fast forward to 2025, if Crosby is still committed to the number 87 the Penguins have a chance to get Crosby back on another 8.7 million dollar deal. This would be highway robbery for a player of Crosby's talents by then.

Players like Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid are making upwards of 12 to 13 million dollars a season. This would give the Penguins around 4 to 5 million in extra cap space to surround Crosby with talent.

If the Penguins are able to bring back Crosby even at his older age back at 8.7 million it will be a big favor to the organization from Crosby. One that could lead to another banner raising in Pittsburgh someday.
