Chicago acquired Taylor Hall earlier this offseason and we now know the true reasoning behind their decision to acquire Hall.

The Questionable Hall Trade

Earlier this offseason, the Chicago Blackhawks brokered a trade with the Boston Bruins which sent Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno (his UFA rights) to Chicago in exchange for a couple of prospects.

The instant reaction amongst fans was "why?" and rightfully so. Chicago is nowhere near contending yet they went and got Hall who is on an expensive contract and coming off a down year who seems more like a piece a contender would acquire at 50% retention. They also could have had the Bruins pay them more to take on Hall's cap but they were content with the move they made.

Now, it seems like the true reason behind the move is revealed.

The True Reason For The Trade

Hall only had 36 points in 61 games last year so it is evident that he was not brought in for his goalscoring prowess.

However, it seems like he was brought in to mentor the 2023 1st overall pick, Connor Bedard.

With Hall having played with 6 other 1st overall picks younger than him, it is clear he knows how to help players younger than him adjust to the NHL. He mentored Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier in New Jersey for a couple of years and helped them adjust to the NHL where they are both stars now.

He will look to help Bedard adjust to the NHL this year and play on his wing developing chemistry between the two.
