Vancouver not planning on using compliance buyout
Per TSN's Elliotte Friedman, the Vancouver Canucks will not be using a buyout this offseason. As Friedman points out, they would have had a window after the recent re-signing of forward Jake Virtanen, but it will not be happening.
This news won't have Canucks fans very happy, as they were hoping they had seen the last of Loui Eriksson in a Vancouver jersey. The 35-year-old has been a complete bust since signing a six-year, $36 million deal in the summer of 2016. The Swedish forward was once a very talented NHL player, posting three straight seasons of over 70 points, but those days are long gone. This past season, he managed just 13 points in 49 regular season games and zero in 10 playoff contests. Through his first four seasons with the Canucks, he has failed to hit the 30-point mark.
Though the Eriksson contract is a tough pill to swallow, Canucks fans still have lots to look forward to. They were able to finish the 2019-20 season third place in the Pacific Division with 78 points in 69 games played. This was in large part due to the play of talented youngsters Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, who will likely be the faces of this organization for a long time to come. While this Eriksson contract will continue to cause headaches for two more seasons, Canucks fans should be very excited for the future.
