Per Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving, the team has signed defenceman Nikita Nesterov to a one-year deal worth $700,000.

Nesterov, 27, will take his second crack at being a full time NHL player. The 5-foot-11 defenceman played in parts of three seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2014-2017, as well as 13 games with the Montreal Canadiens during the 2016-17 season before returning to the KHL. He has suited up for CSKA Moscow in the KHL the last three seasons, posting 60 points over 136 games.

While Nesterov's first tenure in the NHL did not work out as he had hoped, there is much optimism that this time around will go better. He has reportedly improved a lot since heading back to Russia, and as a result he has gained interest from multiple NHL teams over the last year. He has 132 career regular season NHL games under his belt, with nine goals and 33 points. He has also played in 28 post season games, putting up one goal and six assists.
