Flames bring in former Penguin on a one-year deal

Per Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving, the Calgary Flames have signed forward Dominik Simon to a one-year deal worth $700,000.

Simon, 26, has spent the past two and a half seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This past season saw him post seven goal and 15 assists in 64 games. The Prague, Czech Republic native often frustrated Penguins fans due to his lack of offence, as he posted a total of 64 points in 173 games despite often getting top line minutes. While he proved during his time in the AHL from 2015-2018 that he can put up points, he has not been able to put it all together yet at the NHL level.

While fans were frustrated by his play, it is easy to see why the Penguins management seemed to like him so much. Though he is limited offensively, he is a great player in his own end of the ice and was a big part of their penalty kill. The former fifth-round pick (137th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft likely won't put up much for offence with the Flames, but like recently signed Joakim Nordstrom will be relied on to kill penalties, especially after they lost two penalty killers from last season in Mark Jankowski and Tobias Rieder.
