Brian Burke is joining a major Hockey organization's Union, according to a new report.

Brian Burke Takes Union Leadership Spot

Brian Burke, the former GM of the Canucks, Ducks & Maple Leafs, is expected to be named to a leadership position for the PWHLPA, the Players Association of the Professional Women's Hockey League, according to a report from The Hockey News.

Burke, 68, will be a leader in representing players for the planned PWHL, expected to debut in the 2024 as the newest league for Professional Women's Hockey, a league including former teams of the PHF that brings together PHF and PWHPA players.

Burke's Longtime Support For Inclusion

Burke has been a longstanding supporter of Women's Hockey, as well as diversity and inclusion in the sport, Burke's son, Brendan, was openly gay, and a student manager of the NCAA's Miami (OH) RedHawks, until his passing in a car crash in 2010. Brian Burke later helped Co-Found 'You Can Play', which brought forward more LGBT+ representation in support for Hockey, including many Women's Hockey stars who identify as LGBT+.

The new PWHL, expected to start play in 2024, will see Burke help as one of the league's Union on a reported multi-season deal. Burke most recently served as the President of Hockey Operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins since 2021, being fired at the end of the 2022-23 Season.
