The Montreal Canadiens have made their first big free agent splash on Monday, announcing the signing of free agent winger Tyler Toffoli to a 4-year, $17M deal that will keep the 28-year-old in the fold through 2023-24.

Hats off to Marc Bergevin here, as both the term and the AAV ($4.25M) are very good on Toffoli, a 579-game NHL veteran, which includes 54 games of postseason experience. What's even more impressive here is that all of Toffoli's contract is paid in salary, with absolutely nothing coming by way of a signing bonus.

A 2nd round draft pick by the Los Angeles Kings in 2010 (47th overall), Toffoli spent most of his eight NHL seasons with the Kings organization before being shipped off to the Vancouver Canucks in February.

Toffoli has been a fairly consistent point producer throughout his career, as is evidenced by his 300 career NHL points through 525 regular season NHL games (a .57 points-per-game average, or a little over a point every other game).

Toffoli had 34 points in 58 games for the Kings in 2019-20, prior to landing in Vancouver where he elevated his game in a new setting, registering 10 points in 10 regular season contests, and adding another 4 points through 7 playoff games with the Canucks.

With the Toffoli signing, the Habs now sit about $353k above the cap, indicating that Bergevin is not finished tinkering with his roster.
