Sad news in the hockey world Wednesday when it was reported that hockey legend Guy Lafleur is once again battling lung cancer. The Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) issued a statement Wednesday saying the diagnosis of the recurrence came after a followup appointment.

“It's a big blow, but I am continuing my battle with confidence and serenity thanks to the support of the CHUM,” said Lafleur.

The 69-year-old will undergo immunotherapy and chemotherapy treatments, according to the hospital. Last year, Lafleur underwent successful surgery at the same hospital to remove cancer from his lungs. Despite the illness, he wants to continue to play his role as ambassador for the Fondation du CHUM during the treatments.

“It is important for me to continue my commitment to the Foundation,” he said.

Lafleur won five Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens. The Hockey Hall-of-Famer played close to 1200 games in the NHL with the Habs, New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques, putting up 560 goals and 1353 points.

Lafleur was the first player in NHL history to score at least 50 goals and 100 points in six consecutive seasons.
