To say Alexis Lafreniere has been disappointing thus far would be an understatement. The 2020 1st overall pick has played 216 games and registered only 91 points. For comparison, the notorious Nail Yakupov scored 101 points through his first 216 games.
Lafreniere is teetering into bust territory and it seems like he may need a change. In addition to this, the Rangers are in danger of losing Lafreniere to an offer sheet as they currently only have $2.3 million in cap space.
Due to this, many fans are speculating on whether or not Lafreniere will be moved his offseason and if he is, what team will he be moved to.
This mock trade is quite intriguing. It would send Lafreniere home to Quebec to play for the Canadiens. The Canadiens would also be in a position to give Lafreneire a big boost in ice time and could play him on the wing of either Nick Suzuki or Kirby Dach.
This would also net the Canadiens Barclay Goodrow who is overpaid but can establish himself in their bottom six for years to come.
In return, the Rangers would be receiving Josh Anderson who is a workhorse and big body who can score goals. He would mesh well in with the Rangers who have players like Chris Kreider who is smaller but plays a very similar style of game to Anderson.
Anderson would likely slot into the Rangers' second or third line and could benefit greatly from playing with a playmaker like Artemi Panarin, Filip Chytil, or Blake Wheeler.
This trade helps both teams greatly with where their franchises are at the moment. The Canadiens get a player who has 100 point upside who they can develop hopefully into that player while the Rangers get Anderson who can be the piece that helps them win a Stanley Cup.
