The Hurricanes have been heavily pursuing reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson via trade, and it feels like we're nearing a conclusion. An unintended consequence of this heavy pursuance might be that Carolina has to move out one of the top players, and it looks like they've found their guy.

Carolina Shopping Teravainen

Elliotte Friedman has just reported that the Hurricanes are actively shopping Teravainen to other teams in an attempt to make room under the cap limit for Erik Karlsson.

"I think they've talked to some teams about Teravainen, if they need to make some cap room, I think Carolina has a few things going on out there" - Elliotte Friedman

While it wouldn't be the first time we've seen a team move a player who is by all accounts a great player solely to make cap room, we can't say we agree with it.

Dumping His Contract

When the poster of the original Tweet was asked if this was going to be a cap dump or an actual trade with real assets going both ways, they gave a concerning response.

"I believe as a full cap dump to try and clear space to land Karlsson."

Karlsson is an amazing player, but losing Teuvo for nothing just to acquire Karlsson would be terrible asset management. We saw it last offseason when Calgary traded Sean Monahan to Montreal for Future Considerations, and had to give Montreal a 1st round pick just to take Monahan. Monahan bounced back quite quickly with the Habs and has already re-signed there.

We trust Don Waddell, but have to wonder what his plan is here.
