The Toronto Maple Leafs could be close to a potential final decision on Ilya Samsonov, and they may be a few fine details away.

Leafs future with Samsonov appears known

According to a report from National NHL Insider Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, his comments shared on Twitter via The Leafs Nation's Joseph Zita, Toronto appears poised to re-sign Ilya Samsonov.

The Leafs are currently in arbitration with Samsonov, with the Leafs Goalie expected to be Toronto's starter if he is to return. According to Seravalli's comments, the Leafs appear to be close in regards to Samsonov's next contract, and implies arbitration could be a formality.

The details of Samsonov's arbitration

Samsonov's arbitration is currently scheduled for July 21st. The Leafs can still sign Samsonov before that date. Arbitration rules give the Leafs the ability to sign Samsonov to an agreed contract for up to 2 years. No potential contract details have been confirmed.

This arbitration will be the first major re-signing for new Leafs GM Brad Treliving, who will be tasked this season and next with the re-signing of their "core-four" Forward group.

Samsonov, 26, emerged as Toronto's clear starting option after beginning the season as sharing the net with Matt Murray, who may be on the move to shed salary, making $6.25M until the 23-24 season. Joseph Woll, who managed to hold his own in the NHL Playoffs for the Leafs, appeared to showcase a legitimate argument for the backup role.

In 2022-23, Samsonov had a 27-10-5 record for Toronto, along with a 2.33GAA and a .919SV%, playing 9 Playoff games for Toronto.
