It was a true shock when reports came out that Red Wings forward Jonathan Berggren was nearly killed in Sweden.

Luckily he escaped death at the last second, and managed to have an incredible world championship. The promising 22-year-old certainly had a life-altering experience.

Berggren Escapes Death

Per reports, and an interview with Berggren, he nearly lost his life in a tram accident in Sweden.

Jonatan Berggren (@jberggren89) faced a near-death experience a week before the 2023 IIHF World Championship while heading to a practice with Team Sweden in Gothenburg.

The young forward was nearly struck by a tram while crossing the street to the rink with teammates. Berggren reportedly had headphones on and didn't see or hear it approaching while the tram couldn't fully brake in time. This resulted in him having to dive out of the way last-second to avoid being trampled. His teammates claimed it was «terrifying»

Jonatan Berggren, who's only 22, said that it was the «first and hopefully last near-death experience for me.» He went on to score 7 points in 8 games at the tournament. @hockey.worldwide

We are definitely glad that Berggren survived, and we're excited to see his future in the league. What a terrifying moment for the kid.
