Three time Stanley Cup champion Sergei Federov is a legend when it comes to playing in the NHL. However, at 53, there has been talk recently that he may be returning in a new role.

Federov. who's been the head coach of the KHL's CSKA Moscow since 2021, has been linked to NHL teams recently, most notably the Columbus Blue Jackets and one of Federov's former teams, the Anaheim Ducks. Both are currently looking for a head coach. There were even some suggestions that those teams had already talked to Federov on the phone. In an interview in his home country of Russia, Federov said that's not true.
"Can I work in the NHL? No. It's impossible. Has it ever come to a negotiation? It wasn't close. No one called."

"I still have a one-year contract with CSKA. I have no plans to go to North America."

It's doubtful CSKA Moscow would be happy about letting him out of his contract. He's brought the team back-to-back Gagarin Cups, the league's top prize.

Federov's Legacy

In addition to his three Stanley Cups, Federov has Hart Trophy, two Selke awards and was named an NHL All-Star six times. He is the only NHL player to win both the Hart and Selke in the same year. He is the first Russian-born player ever to hit 1000 points in the league.
