Three seasons into his stint with the Washington Capitals, and Peter Laviolette is no longer employed by the team. According to a news release from the Caps, Laviolette's contract expires on June 30th, and will not be renewed.

Both sides are calling it a mutual parting of ways.

"We are grateful for Peter's leadership and dedication to our organization for the last three seasons," said Washington GM Todd MacLellan. "Peter is a first-class individual who has represented our club with integrity and guided our team through many difficult circumstances in his tenure as our head coach. We wish him all the best moving forward."

A replacement for Laviolette has not yet been named by Washington.

Laviolette took over behind the bench for the Capitals in 2020. In their last three seasons, Washington lost twice in the first round of the playoffs, and then capped off this season by missing the post season completely. All of this comes after winning the Cup with Barry Trotz in 2018. Trotz was then lured to the New York Islanders, with Todd Reirden taking over for the Caps. Reirden lasted two season before being replaced by Laviolette.
