When the Montreal Canadiens drafted Lane Hutson in the 2nd round of the 2022 NHL Draft, the franchise had high hopes for the prospect. However, not even the Montreal Canadiens could have predicted Hutson would take off the way he has over the past season. After being drafted Hutson went onto what can only be described as a historic season at Boston University.

This season in 39 games, Hutson put up 15 goals and 33 assists for 48 points as an 18/19-year-old. At 5'9 and 148 pounds, Hutson was expected to struggle against larger competition. That would never come to fruition.

After his incredible season many expected the Canadiens to make a push to get Hutson signed to an NHL contract, securing his rights. However, that doesn't appear to be the case. According to Elliotte Friedman, it appears Hutson intends to return next season to Boston University to pursue another National Championship.
Friedman at the intermission says the belief is Lane Hutson will return to B.U. next season, no confirmation though.
While this might be the right move for Hutson's development, it will surely leave some Montreal Canadiens fans disappointed. The smooth skating, high octane offensive defenseman is something the Canadiens could desperately use to help their powerplay, but an additional year at Boston University will do no harm to Hutson as he looks to eventually transition to the NHL.
