Matthew Knies is easily the Maple Leafs top prospect. The former 57th overall pick in 2021 has seen his draft stock rise almost daily since being selected by the Leafs. After two more strong years at the University of Minnesota many people expected it to be a sure thing Knies would sign with the Leafs.

Not so fast.

With Knies about to appear in this years Frozen Four Finals, he sat down and discussed his future with the team at NHL.com.

"[The Maple Leafs] have been in good communication with me. They've obviously been very professional about it and they've given me my space to let me focus on being here. I haven't really thought so much about it and I think once the season really ends I can sit back down with them and weigh the pros and the cons.

While Knies doesn't say he's unwilling to sign with the Leafs it also doesn't sound like a sure thing like some fans would like for you to believe. The interesting caveat for Knies is, if he returns to school next year he could potentially walk himself to unrestricted College Free Agency the following summer.

So what is Kyle Dubas and the Leafs next move?
