The number 1 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft has been set in stone way before the puck dropped on this past season. Every hockey fan will know the name of Connor Bedard. He is coming off putting up astronomical numbers with the Regina Pats in the WHL. In 57 games played Bedard scored 71 goals and 143 points. The next closest player in the race was Prince George's Chase Wheatcroft scored 107 points.

On the 32 Thoughts Podcast Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman discussed Bedard blocking a trade to a WHL powerhouse:

Friedman and Marek on 32TP says Connor Bedard didn't want to go to the Kamloops Blazers in a potential WHL trade.

Prior to the deadline, Bedard had the opportunity to relocate from a very average Pats team to a front runner Kamloops Blazers team, which would have given him a much better shot at winning a championship. However, Bedard chose to stay, rejecting a deal to Kamloops.

If the Bedard trade would have been completed, Regina would have been able to capture a franchise altering amount of assets. As a player under the age of 18, Bedard held a full no movement clause in his deal, giving him full power to veto any deal.
