Halfway into the second period of a game between the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning, Islanders' defenceman Alexander Romanov looked to energize his team with a scrum after the whistle with the Islanders down 4-0.

Romanov initiated a scrum around the Islanders' goaltender, grabbing former teammate Corey Perry and bringing him down to the ice with a wrestling-style takedown.
By a stroke of bad luck, Romanov felt the worst of his strong takedown. As Perry was knocked to the ice, Romanov followed, and slammed his head on the ice as he fell. Following the play, Romanov exited the game for the remainder of the second period, but at the moment it's not known if he suffered an injury. The Islanders and their fans will hope Romanov will be healthy in time for the first round of the playoffs, less than 10 games away.
It could be argued that Perry deserved more responsibility for his role in the scrum, but was only penalized for a slash before the scrum ensued. Romanov was issued a roughing minor, but didn't serve the penalty as he left the game.
In the last couple games around the league, the marked intensity and physicality is a preview of what's to come in the playoffs. The playoffs is the best time of year in any sport, especially hockey, and soon it will be getting started.
