Although it is a difficult task, informing players about a trade is an essential part of any NHL GM's job. In the most recent episode of Oilers+, a subscription-based all-access show, the General Manager of Edmonton Oilers, Ken Holland, completed the trade of Tyson Barrie (and other assets) to the Nashville Predators for Mattias Ekholm. Following the trade, Holland's next responsibility was to inform Barrie of the news, and the clip features the conversation from both sides.

Regardless of personal opinion, Holland is an experienced professional with loads of experience in making such calls. Despite that, it's evident that the conversation was uncomfortable for both parties involved. Holland quickly conveyed the news to Barrie in an attempt to get it out and over with.
"Hey Tyson? Yeah, I've traded you to Nashville," said Holland as soon as Barrie answers the call.
"I want to thank you for everything you've done for us, and I hate these days," Holland continued. "You're a good man and a big part of our team, but you're going to Nashville and Ekholm's coming here."
Although the surprise in Barrie's voice is evident, he manages to handle the situation with as much composure as possible.
"Obviously a bit disappointing for me, I wanted to see it through here," said Barrie. "But, I understand your guys' needs and I hope it works out for you guys."
Holland went on to commend Barrie for his exceptional leadership skills both on and off the ice, although his body language, specifically rubbing his hand over his face, indicated his discomfort with the situation. The conversation concluded abruptly with a quick "Thanks Tys."
Rarely do fans get to witness this level of behind-the-scenes interaction. This exchange offers insight into the challenges that players and GMs face during trades and other uncomfortable circumstances.
