During Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes star Andrei Svechnikov suffered a lower-body injury and was forced to sit out Sunday's contest against New Jersey.

On Monday, an update was issued on Svechnikov and according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, as the team awaits a second opinion on his injury, there is concern that it could be a torn ACL, which would shut the 22-year-old for the rest of the year.

"Andrei had an MRI on Monday afternoon, and had a consultation with our team doctors," said Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell. "In the interest of being thorough, we are continuing to gather information along with Andrei to make the best decision for his health. We will provide further information after a decision is made."

Losing Svechnikov would be a massive blow for a Carolina team that's currently first place in the Metropolitan Division. The Barnaul (Russia) native has appeared in 64 games this season and is tied for second on the Hurricanes in points with 55 and third in goals with 23.
