The San Jose Sharks were one of the busier teams leading up to the NHL's trade deadline last Friday. Among the moves they made were sending Timo Meier to New Jersey, Nick Bonino to Pittsburgh and acquiring college prospect Henry Thrun from their state rivals, the Anaheim Ducks.

Several names on their roster were in the rumour mill for weeks leading up to March 3rd, but one of the names that was reportedly out there was pending unrestricted free agent goaltender James Reimer.

After the deadline had passed, Reimer said that he was disappointed not to be dealt to a contending team and have a chance to play for the Stanley Cup.

"I mean, obviously, the goal is to win a Cup. That's been the goal since I was three years old," Reimer said. "It's unfortunate, [it] didn't come to fruition."

The goaltending market ahead of the deadline was pretty thin, with not many teams on the look out for help in the crease. Part of the reason could be attributed to the salary cap and but also teams getting ahead of deadline day, including the Los Angeles Kings and the Columbus Blue Jackets, who swapped goaltenders.

Jonathan Quick was dealt from Los Angeles to Columbus for Joonas Korpisalo. The Blue Jackets then flipped Quick to the Vegas Golden Knights as it was clear if the two-time Stanley Cup champion would report to Columbus.

For Reimer, who turns 35 next Wednesday, he'll have to settle for splitting starts with Kaapo Kahkonen for the remainder of the season, before re-evaluating his options for the 2023-24 season on July 1st.
