One of the biggest questions looming over the NHL's Trade Deadline is whether or not the San Jose Sharks will be able to move defenseman Erik Karlsson.

The 32-year old is having the best season of his career, which says a ton. Previously, Karlsson's best season - 2015-16 - ended with 82 points in 82 games. So far in '22-23, the Sharks' blue liner has 73 points in 54 games; a 110-point pace.

In overall points, Karlsson ranks 1st among defensemen and 5th among all skaters with 28 games to go. He has been truly sensational so far for San Jose. Is his historic season enough for a contending team to fork up the necessary assets to acquire him, though?

According to Edmonton Radio Host, Bob Stauffer, the Edmonton Oilers offered up a haul for Karlsson.

Per Stauffer, the Oilers offer for Karlsson would be a 2023 1st round pick, defenseman Evan Bouchard, center prospect Xavier Bourgault, and two contracts (presumably D Tyson Barrie and F Jesse Puljujarvi).

A 1st rounder this summer plus Bouchard (#10, 2018) and Bourgault (#22, 2021) would satisfy the 'three 1st round picks' criteria, while Barrie and Puljujarvi would act as a salary countermeasure. Although Stauffer didn't mention it, the Sharks would most certainly need to retain a percentage of Karlsson's $10.5 million salary.

After all, there is simply no other way this deal gets done, as the Oilers have $0 in cap space. Per CapFriendly, trading Bouchard, Barrie and Puljujarvi would alleviate $8,363,333 in cap space for the Oilers. Therefore, if San Jose retains 21% of Karlsson's salary, the deal could work.

This is all hypothetical of course, assuming San Jose takes that deal.
