According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs have placed veteran forward Wayne Simmonds on waivers, but added that it's likely just a paper transaction.

TSN's Chris Johnston added that if Simmonds clears waivers on Wednesday, he'll be waiver exempt through March 3rd, which is the NHL's trade deadline. He says that will help the Maple Leafs to optimize their cap for potential deals ahead of the deadline.

The Scarborough (Ontario) native is in his third season with the Maple Leafs and has recorded one assist, 34 penalty minutes and has an even rating in 13 games.

Tuesday marks the third time this season that the Maple Leafs have placed Simmonds on waivers, per CapFriendly.

In other related news, Spencer Martin (Vancouver) and Axel Jonsson-Fjallby (Winnipeg) have cleared waivers and will be assigned to their respective American Hockey League clubs.
