Following the International Olympic Committee's decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at Paris 2024 under a neutral flag, the IIHF is beginning to ponder the future of the two countries in their own competitions.

Last February, the IIHF banned the two nations from competing in all tournaments due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Belarus aiding them. It's unclear if either nation will be allowed to return in the near future, but the IIHF wants to ensure the safety of all players and others at their events once the two nations return.

"We've got the responsibility. We have to guarantee the safety of all the participants -- the staff, the players, the fans. That's our responsibility, so that's our decision," IIHF President Luc Tardif said.

The International Ice Hockey Federation is set to make a decision on Russia and Belarus' participation in events for the 2023-24 season in May. Then next year, they'll decide if either nation will be allowed to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
