Following a 5-2 defeat to a divisional opponent - the Carolina Hurricanes - Islanders fans broke out in a 'Fire Lou [Lamoriello]' chant. The Isles sit two spots and two points outside the playoffs with three more games played than the Pittsburgh Penguins, who occupy the final Wild Card spot.

The Islanders fired head coach Barry Trotz this summer, which looked like a bad idea at the time, and it looks worse in hindsight. With a record of 23-20-5, the Islanders are plainly average in both goals-for and goals-against. At least under Trotz, they were near the top of the league in the latter.

As such, fans pin the team's problems on the GM:

Per CapFriendly, the Isles currently have ~$1.5 million in cap space and all their draft picks, save possibly a conditional 3rd rounder which may or may not go to the Arizona Coyotes depending on Andrew Ladd.

Lamoriello must know that he needs to make a splash to improve his team, but that won't be easy to do. He needs to clear cap space. That much is simple.

But who does he ship out? Who can he ship out? Not many trade partners will be in a rush to take on a bad contract in exchange, and if they are it will cost Lamoriello - a lot.

Tough scene on the Island.
