Early in the first period of Wednesday's tilt between Tampa Bay and Vancouver, Lightning captain Steven Stamkos reached a historic milestone. The 32-year-old became the first player in Tampa Bay Lightning history and only third active player in the NHL to score 500 career goals.

Stamkos would have been hard-pressed to have had a better opportunity than the one he had to get goal number 500 tonight. The Lightning capitalized on a pretty bad defensive play by the Canucks and Stamkos was left alone in front, where he tapped home a pass from Alex Killorn to give him 500 career goals and his team a 1-0 lead.
