Now, I'll preface this by saying, take this with a grain of salt because we all know Nick Kypreos can be 'iffy' in terms of information from around the NHL.

According to Kypreos, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews is reportedly seeking to have the highest AAV in National Hockey League history, with the 25-year-old wanting an eight-year deal, worth $15 million per season.

Kypreos went on to add that the Maple Leafs won't "hand it over" to Matthews and that contract negotiations are expected to go on for a while.

Matthews, a native of San Ramon, is in his seventh season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in July 2024, unless he can work out a contract extension with the team. Matthews is eligible to sign a contract extension with the Maple Leafs on July 1st, 2023.

In 36 games this season, Matthews has 40 points (17 goals, 23 assists), ten penalty minutes and is a plus-15.
