When the Montreal Canadiens announced earlier this week that they will be honouring former defenceman P.K. Subban, fans were calling for the team to celebrate another fan-favourite, Andrei Markov.

Well it turns out that the Canadiens intended to honour Markov on the same night as Subban, according to the team's Vice President of Communications, Chantal Machabee. Unfortunately, the 44-year-old had commitments in Russia and wouldn't have been able to make it.
While on the 'On Jase' radio show on RDS, Machabee went on to add that the Canadiens still intend on honouring Markov at a later date and are still in discussion with him.
Markov, a native of Voskresensk (Russia), was drafted by the Canadiens in the sixth round in 1998. He went on to appear in 990 career games across 16 NHL seasons, putting up 572 points (119 goals, 453 assists), 505 penalty minutes and was a plus-64.
He is considered by many to be one of the best defenceman to ever play with the Canadiens and honouring him is the right thing to do. Plenty of Habs fans have been saying that the organization should retire his number at some point.
Should the Canadiens go one step further and retire Markov's number 79? Let us know in the poll below!
