With word Monday that the Vancouver Canucks had offered captain Bo Horvat a new contract that he had rejected, we now know exactly what that offer entailed. Insider Frank Seravalli appeared on Sportsnet Radio in Vancouver and said the team's offer was below what Horvat is currently making.

"The offer in the summer, the initial one that they first made, was exactly the Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contract," said Seravalli. "8 [years] times $5.125 million."
Horvat is coming off a contract that paid him $5.5 million. He'll be a free agent at the end of this season. Seravalli said it's not uncommon for team's to make lowball offers at the beginning of contract negotiation, with the hope that the two sides would meet somewhere in the middle. However, he added this offer didn't sit well with Horvat and his camp.
"I think this initial volley was so outside the ballpark of what the Horvat camp considered respectable that there was a good amount of frustration," said Seravalli.
On Monday, Rick Dhaliwal reported that the Canucks are left with no choice but to trade Horvat before or at the deadline in the hopes of getting a good return as contract talks are done. Reports state that Horvat was looking for a new deal in the vicinity of $8 million per year.
