The period for NHL teams to sign restricted free agents (RFA's) has passed, which means that Alex Formenton of the Ottawa Senators will be ineligible to play for the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign.

Formenton, 23, entered the 2022 offseason as an RFA, and was unable to work out a deal with the Sens at any point. It is a disappointing development for a player who showed some serious potential last season with 18 goals and 32 points in 79 games. The Barrie native, who was selected by the Sens in the second-round (47 overall) in the 2017 draft, has played a total of 109 NHL games, registering 23 goals and 39 points.

What this means for Formenton's season as a whole remains unknown. He likely has several options in Europe he could pursue for the remainder of 2022-23 should he wish to do so. As for his future with the Sens, it remains murky at best, as they may look to trade his rights given that they didn't appear interested in signing him to an extension.
