Ottawa Senators restricted free agent forward Alex Formenton still needs a contract. The Sens' brass have made it clear that they do not plan on signing him this season, leaving many of us to speculate as to why.

If Formenton is not signed by 5pm EST on Thursday 12/1, he is ineligible to play in the 2022-23 season.

According to Elliotte Friedman's 32 Thoughts blog from Wednesday night, some teams have inquired about a trade for Formenton in months past, but nothing seems imminent. He also alludes to the 2018 World Junior fiasco and adds that no update is expected before the NHL's 5pm deadline.

If Formenton is unsigned by Thursday's deadline, the sentiment suggests that he will play overseas for the remainder of this season, with his NHL future up in the air.
