During the '32 Thoughts' segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet insider Jeff Marek said that 2022 4th-overall pick Shane Wright will be sent to the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds on Sunday for a conditioning stint.
Normally for players that are still eligible to be sent back to junior hockey (OHL, WHL, QMJHL), they can't be assigned to the AHL. However, through a loophole in the CBA, Wright is able to.
Wright being a healthy scratch for Seattle's last five games opens up the option of sending him on a two week conditioning stint to the AHL, which Seattle is expected to do at some point on Sunday.
Marek also mentioned that there is still a possibility of Wright being loaned to Team Canada for the 2023 World Juniors. Once Wright returns from his conditioning stint, he'll have one game in the NHL (against Montreal) before potentially joining up with Canada for training camp. Although, there hasn't been official word from the Kraken on whether or not Wright will be loaned.
Wright, 18, has appeared in seven games for Seattle this season, recording one assist, two penalty minutes and is a plus-four.
Marek mentions this was always Seattle's plan, he was previously scratched for 4 consecutive games but McCann got injured and he drew in the line-up so they had to reset and scratch him for 5 consecutive games again.
