Pierre Dorion, general manager of the Ottawa Senators, needs a defenseman, and he's not interested in being coy about it.

"Very active," Dorion said following the general managers meeting Tuesday. "Very active to see what's out there, what's going on."

The Sens have already used nine different blueliners this season, and suffered a big blow Saturday when Thomas Chabot was placed in concussion protocol. He's out at least seven days.

"I think we're just going to keep looking," Dorion said. "If we can add externally, we'll look at that."

Ottawa has been linked to Arizona Coyotes defenceman Jakob Chychrun since last season. It's likely going to take a huge package to get him, something that may be tough for the Sens when you're already shorthanded.

As for the team's struggles early in the season, Dorion said he won't be firing coach DJ Smith right now.

"Coaching is not the problem," said Dorion.

"At this time of the year, I think we're all gauging to see where we're going to be, where everyone will be by Christmas time," he added. "We have to be somewhat patient, but we can't let this continue on for too long."
