Heading into the 2022-23 season, many would have considered Erik Karlsson's contract to be amongst the worst in the NHL. The often injured 32-year-old's play had declined in recent years, making his $11.5 million cap hit, which doesn't expire until the end of the 2026-27 season, a major headache for the San Jose Sharks. Fast forward to where we are now, however, and it may no longer be the issue many thought it was.

Through 17 games this season, Karlsson has 10 goals and 22 points. Those totals lead all Sharks players by a significant margin, but also rank first amongst all NHL defensemen. Whatever injuries he was dealing with in past years appear to be in the past, as he looks every bit like the elite player he was for so many years with the Ottawa Senators. Despite that, however, the Sharks are open to trading him if teams call with offers.

"I'll listen, but at the end of the day, too, a lot will depend on Erik, too," said Sharks general manager Mike Grier. "He's got the trade protection and (has control over) what he wants to do. I know right now he's happy. He's happy in San Jose. His family's happy there. And we're thrilled with how he's playing."

Karlsson's resurgence is great news for the Sharks, who are looking at a potentially long, painful rebuild. With his great play, there is a chance they may be able to deal him for future assets, while also removing a good chunk of his cap hit off their books. While there is no guarantee it would happen, it would be fascinating to see just how good his numbers could look if he were moved to a more competitive roster.
