Retired NHL referee Tim Peel, other referees, and the NHL all maintain that 'make-up calls' aren't a thing, gaslighting all of us over something we all realize. We may have just caught them in the act last night.

The Islanders and the Flames played a hard, well fought game on Monday night that saw the home team pull out the win in overtime, on a powerplay goal from Noah Dobson. The refs missed a clear high-stick on defenseman Alexander Romanov late in the third when it was tied 3-3. See below:

Shortly into the overtime period, they called Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson for interference. One that was probably a penalty, but in overtime it could easily not have been called, as Pelech did fall fairly easily given how strong of a skater he is.
And bada-bing-bada-boom Noah Dobson crams it top-cheese:
This was a pretty clear case of a make-up call being used and it playing a huge role in the outcome of a game. The Andersson call was an iffy call to begin with, but the fact that they missed the clear high-stick on Romanov makes it a little suspicious. It's not totally conclusive, and to be honest it actually ended up working out the way it should have; put simply: puck don't lie.
