The Washington Capitals drafted Ivan Miroshnichenko 20th overall in this past summer's draft, and only recently was he cleared for play after nearly a year-long absence. In March of 2021, it was announced that Miroshnichenko would miss significant time to a 'serious health concern' which was later diagnosed as Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Since he was cleared for action, he started off his return with a condition stint in the MHL which is the KHL's junior affiliate league. In those two games, Miroshnichenko has a goal and an assist plus a shootout winner.

Capitals' fans have to feel good for their guy after this. Beats the cancer, gets back into fighting shape, and immediately making an impact, no matter the level. His talent has been on display since the opening whistle, and there were even a few folks - long before the draft - who speculated that Miroshnichenko could have been a top-five talent in his draft class if not for his untimely diagnosis.

Washington may have gotten themselves a steal in the draft, but more importantly it looks like they got an incredible human with lots of potential. The Caps also have a great culture in which prospects can develop, which bodes well for the future of Miroshnichenko.

Miroshnichenko is set to report to Avangard Omsk at the end of his conditioning stint, where the real test begins for his return. If all goes well this year, is it possible we see him in North America next season?
