When the Edmonton Oilers got swept at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Finals, it was a nearly unanimous conclusion that GM Ken Holland would add a goaltender. He did just that when he signed free agent Jack Campbell to a five-year, $25 million contract this summer.

So far, Oilers fans cannot say that the deal has left them with any peace of mind, as Campbell's woes persist. Despite a 5-3 record, his latest start did nothing to assuage their concerns either. Campbell stopped 30 of 36 Dallas Stars' shots in the Oilers 6-2 matinee shellacking, and there is more than one Campbell wants back.

After the game, an emotional-sounding Campbell was visibly disgusted with his own play. One reporter asked the netminder what he thought of his play since signing with Edmonton, and Campbell kept it open and honest.
"I just haven't brought my best and frankly it's just been pathetic the way I've been playing. I owe it to this team to bring my A-game & they haven't seen it yet."

Since signing with the Oilers, Campbell has a 4.20 GAA and a .874 SV%, and if not for the team's ability to seemingly generate goals out of thin air *cough Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl cough* the Oilers' goaltending would seriously cost them. Still, one cannot help but think head coach Jay Woodcroft wants Campbell to find his game.
If Campbell can't get it together, the Oilers do have Stuart Skinner, who has been strong when he's had to be; better than Campbell frankly. They also have Mike Smith, who sits on long term injured reserve but could play later on in the season if needed. All well and good, but in year one of five the Oilers may want a mulligan on this signing.
