Last night's match featuring the Seattle Kraken and the Carolina Hurricanes saw the latter trounce their hosts in a 5-1 rout. The Hurricanes continue to storm out of the gate -- no pun intended -- whereas the Kraken are still trying to find their footing -- pun intended. Kraken don't have feet.

In any event, Kraken defenseman Carson Soucy threw a very questionable hit on Carolina's Seth Jarvis where it was clear shoulder-to-head contact. Jarvis is a fairly short guy, this is true, but all things considered this was not a good hit by Soucy.
Let us observe:
In real-time, the hit was not as late as it appeared in video, but it was late. Jarvis had time to take three full strides between moving the puck and point of impact. Soucy, a highly-tuned professional athlete, should know better. He had more than enough time to pull-back his decision.
Second, the point of contact. Clear as day, Soucy rammed his shoulder into Jarvis' face. I get it, there is like a six-inch gap between the two. But with all the data we have on head injuries, there has to be a clear line not to cross.
The situations is only exacerbated by the fact that Jarvis has a concussion history, thanks to Jacob Trouba. I'll probably be called soft for this take, but there is just something about repetitive brain injuries from a ~game~ that doesn't sit quite right with me.
Soucy's hit was not legal at all, and I do not really see a case for the contrary.
In light of that, it is not my belief nor my expectation that any supplemental discipline should befall the Kraken defender.
If anything, a two-minute minor should have been assessed, but Jarvis was fine and stayed in the game. No harm, no foul.
