The Winnipeg Jets announced on Thursday that goaltender Mikhail Berdin won't be playing during the 2022-23 season per advice of the NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program.

In a statement the team said, "The rights of the club and player will be consistent with the treatment of a suspended player, so he will not be paid by the club and his salary will not count against the salary cap. As part of an agreement between the club, NHL, NHLPA and the player, Berdin will be permitted to sign a one-year contract to play outside of North America for the 2022-23 season."

According to the 24-year-old's agent, Dan Milstein, Berdin will be returning to Russia to be closer to his family and will sign a contract to play in the KHL for the 2022-23 campaign. His former KHL club, SKA St. Petersburgh currently hold his rights.

Berdin, a native of Ufa, appeared in 32 games last season for Winnipeg's AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, where he sported a 19-10-2 record, along with a 2.40 GAA, a .902 save percentage and four shutouts.

We hope everything is okay with Berdin and that whatever the issue may be, he gets the help he needs.
