The Colorado Avalanche will begin their defence of the Stanley Cup without their captain according to Head Coach Jared Bednar.

When speaking to the media on Thursday, Bednar said that Gabriel Landeskog won't be skating anytime soon and will miss the start of the season with an injury he's been dealing with since last season.

It's unclear what the injury is, but Landeskog was able to push through in the playoffs and helped the Avalanche win their third Stanley Cup in franchise history. He also became the fourth European-born captain to hoist the Stanley Cup, following the footsteps of Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit - 2008), Zdeno Chara (Boston - 2011) and Alexander Ovechkin (Washington - 2018).

Landeskog, 29, had a strong year for the Avalanche last season, recording his second career 30 goal season. In 51 games, the Stockholm native had 59 points, 79 penalty minutes and was a plus-27. He went on to add 22 points in 20 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Landeskog-less Avalanche will open up their 2022-23 season and hoist their third Stanley Cup banner on October 12th against the Chicago Blackhawks.
