Hockey Canada now has three open sexual assault investigations pending, and the walls are closing in on the organization's leadership. Calls for institutional change befall Hockey Canada, and the longer it takes the more painstaking it is sure to be.

High profile Canadiens like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and representatives of Canada's iconic Women's team have vocalized their desires for new leadership within Hockey Canada, yet the organization has doubled down on its own personnel, unsurprisingly.

Hockey Canada even had CEO Scott Smith distribute gold medals to Canada's Women's team after their defeat of Team USA this summer. A move that has garnered serious criticism and was blatantly disrespectful, considering key members of that team called for Smith's dismissal.

Joshua Clipperton, National Hockey Writer for The Canadian Press, reports that Cale Makar discussed the latest news with his parents and that he and his family know that change in leadership is needed.

Makar said, "My parents talk about all the fees that they paid Hockey Canada and yada yada for me to be able to play, and then for all this stuff that come out, I can only imagine the amount of parents that were thinking, 'Oh, this is where my fees.' It's obviously a very tough look. The identity and the culture definitely needs to be changed. It's just that time."

The reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner is a huge voice on the side of change, and if more and more Canadian NHLers join in, Hockey Canada's leadership is running on a limited shelf-life, if they are not already. Makar is a critical aspect of Hockey Canada's future, so his endorsement for change within the organization is monumental.

Sadly, Marie-Philip Poulin and the rest of the women's team ought to receive the same respect in this matter, but as long as Hockey Canada fails to address its failures in appointing new leadership, the slights will proceed uninhibited.
