This is Why Nick Suzuki is the Perfect Choice as the Habs' Captain
Earlier today, the Montreal Canadiens officially declared Nick Suzuki the club's 31st captain, and from what I can gather so far, this move is apparently controversial? It appears the majority of folks agree that Suzuki is a sensible choice given his discipline and poise at such a young age. However, there appears to be a corner of the internet that thinks Suzuki is undeserving, and we are just going to quash that right now.
First off, all of Suzuki's teammates respect everything about. His preparation, his attention to detail, and his maturity have all been discussed at length by a number of current and former teammates. Retired forward Mathieu Perrault, just the other day, argued that Suzuki is the right choice for captain. Today, following the announcement, Brendan Gallagher called Suzuki 'the heartbeat of our team,' somebody everyone will follow.
Further to the point, Suzuki is a rising star in the NHL, and at just 23-years old he already has 200+ NHL games under his belt and has been dubbed 'the next Patrice Bergeron,' who just so happens to be one of the greatest leaders ever to play in the league. He is the Habs' top center, arguably their best player, and there is no better choice as the team's long-term leader, all due respect to Gallagher and Joel Edmundson.
Those reasons alone are not enough to persuade you that Nick Suzuki is Grade-A Captain Material? Fine.
According to Renaud Lavoie of TVASports, Suzuki called the Habs' most recent captain -- Shea Weber -- and convened with him before accepting the role. Weber told Suzuki that he was ready for the role. If you are still dissatisfied, then I don't know what to tell you.
Nick Suzuki is the perfect choice to lead this Habs' team going forward. He possesses all the intangibles one could ever desire in a leader, he talks the talk AND walks the walk, and no one commands more respect in the room.
